Hi! My name is Amada and my boyfriend’s name is Damon.
On April 29th, 2014 we decided to start the Dukan Diet, as a chance to lose some weight together and be healthy. We have been living together for about a year, and when we met back in 2011, I was transitioning from unemployment to being self-employed and running a business from home. I think during that time, although I was making some huge transitions in my life, I also seemed to take it out on myself health-wise. I have always had a very bad habit of eating before bed to help me sleep and to numb out after a crazy day. I also began drinking a lot more than usual and before I realized it, I had started to gain weight. I figured since I am a tour guide and dancer, and because I am so tall (5’8″), no one would ever notice. Well they did, and I started to actually feel the strain during the end of 2013. My knees, ankles, back, and most recently my heel started to hurt. It turns out I managed to get something called a heel spur.
The real fun began when I was invited to help my boss out on New Year’s Eve for a Brooklyn Bridge walk. We thought it would be fun to do something different on New Year’s, and so we volunteered to help pass out bags and sign people in. We would later join the last tour heading out to get to the bridge before midnight. Well…as it turns out, not only was it freezing but the quick walk downtown to the bridge really took a toll on me physically. My best friend Anna and her boyfriend Chris joined us, and as we rushed up the bridge to catch up with the tour guide, I had to stop several times. My back was extremely sore and I just couldn’t keep up. I almost cried several times — and not just the kind where it’s a few tears. It was embarrassing and I was extremely angry because deep down inside, I knew that I had done it to myself. I was angry because my spirit wanted to fly but my body was beyond heavy to catch up with what was going on inside my heart. Damon had to stop several times to turn around and hold me up. He even said to me, “I wish I could carry you.” But there was nothing I could do but will myself to run and keep moving. Somehow, miraculously, we made it up the hill and found our tour guide Nathan who happened to be a friend of mine. We basically missed the whole thing and only had a few minutes left before the fireworks went off. My friends didn’t say anything about having to wait for me. We just hugged each other, happy that we had made it. But do you remember the scene from Rocky where he runs up the steps and bounces around? That’s what happened to me after I made it up there. I said to myself, it’s time to end this.
So Damon and I started changing the way we ate. No more carbs at dinner unless it was brown rice. We ordered meal plans that were basically low carb options and cut down on ordering Chinese food every week. Damon basically does most of the cooking since I am always out giving tours or working from home.
Then recently a couple friends of mine from my dance group Thrill The World NYC pulled me aside and said that they had indeed noticed me gaining weight and were seriously worried about my health. One of them had previously introduced me to the diet and went so far as to give me her copy of the Dukan Diet book along with a whole package of tilapia to get started. However, I wasn’t truly ready at the time for the drastic changes that it was asking for. And it’s not like I hadn’t been on other diets in the past (Atkins & Nutrisystem) where I definitely lost 50 pounds at one point or another. It just seemed that after New Year’s, and with all these new health issues, it gave me more of an incentive to try it. Another factor added into all of this was that in December, at my friend’s birthday party, I had weighed myself and saw that I had gained about 430 pounds. This was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. It was time to wake up and do something about it.
